Naturopathy stands distinct from conventional medicine in the philosophy upon which it is based. Naturopathic medicine is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability.

The Six Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

The term “naturopathy” was developed in 1892 to describe a rapidly growing system of natural therapeutics that drew from Hippocrates and the traditional and indigenous medicines from cultures of the world. Today’s naturopathic doctors blend modern, science-based diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with ancient and traditional methods. Naturopathic physicians follow six fundamental principles of naturopathic medicine:

1. First do no harm
2. Identify and treat the cause
3. Healing power of nature
4. Doctor as teacher
5. Treat the whole person
6. Prevention

Naturopathic Doctors have a similar level of medical training as conventional medical doctors.

Naturopathic doctors are family practice-oriented primary care physicians. Naturopathic training consists of a four-year, graduate-level, accredited naturopathic medical school. The first two years of schooling are like those of a conventional medical doctor. The additional two to four years consist of specialized academic courses as well as courses in naturopathic therapeutics like herbal medicine, homeopathy, body work, spinal manipulation, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, clinical nutrition, and counseling. After graduation, NDs must pass national board examination to become licensed.
